How we build it
Railing done right
Railing is the most-touched part of a deck or porch, so it needs to be solid, square and code-compliant. We set or reinforce posts to the framing rather than surface-mounting to decking, hold the correct guard height, keep baluster spacing inside code, and add graspable handrail on every stair run. The result feels tight when you lean on it, which is exactly the point.
Vinyl railing is the low-maintenance classic and pairs naturally with white and tan vinyl fence. Aluminum gives you a slim, black, view-through profile that disappears against a landscape. Composite matches composite decking for a single-material look with a substantial feel. All three come with cap, post and infill options, including cable and glass panels on the aluminum systems.
We also replace tired railing on sound decks and porches, which is often the single highest-impact upgrade you can make to an older deck. Add post cap or riser lighting and the space stays comfortable and safe after dark.

- What height does railing need to be?
- Residential deck guards are typically 36 inches, with stair handrail set in the code-required graspable range. We build to the height your inspector enforces.
- Can I add railing to an existing deck?
- Usually yes. We confirm the framing can carry post loads and reinforce where it cannot.
- Which railing lasts longest?
- Powder-coated aluminum and PVC both hold up extremely well. Aluminum wins on slim sightlines, vinyl on matching white fence.
