Most struggling landscapes were installed correctly for the wrong timeline. Shrubs get packed in tight because the bed looks sparse the day it is planted, and five years later the same bed is a wall of overgrown material crowding the windows. We space plantings for mature size and fill the gaps in the early years with perennials and grasses that are cheap to move, so the bed looks intentional now and still works later.

Planting depth and soil are the other two things that decide whether a plant lives. Trees and shrubs set too deep — with the root flare buried or the burlap and wire basket left intact around the top of the ball — die slowly and confusingly, often years later. We set the root flare at grade, cut away basket and burlap from the upper ball, backfill with amended native soil rather than a pocket of pure compost, and water in to eliminate air voids. Central Pennsylvania clay in particular needs its planting holes scored so roots do not just circle inside a slick-sided pit.

The plan follows the property. Foundation beds get evergreens that will not swallow the windows, fence lines get plantings that soften a long run without pressing panels, sun and shade get species that actually want those conditions, and privacy screens use staggered arborvitae or holly rather than a single soldier row that leaves a hole the moment one plant fails. Everything gets mulched, edged and watered in, and you get plain-language watering instructions for the first season, which is when almost all new-plant failure happens.
