Decorative Stone & River Rock Beds

Stone is the right call in the places mulch keeps failing: narrow drip strips along a foundation, beds under a downspout where mulch washes out every storm, side yards nobody wants to maintain, and around utility pads, AC units and shed skirts. It does not decompose, it does not blow away, and it does not need a truckload of replacement every April. The trade-off is that stone is a long-term commitment — changing your mind means shoveling it back out.

Because it is permanent, the prep has to be right the first time. Unlike mulch beds, stone beds genuinely do benefit from a quality woven landscape fabric underneath, since the fabric is what keeps the stone from disappearing down into the soil over the years. We grade the bed, install fabric, set a hard edge — steel, paver or block — deep enough to hold the stone in, then place stone to the depth the size calls for and rinse it clean.

Sizing and color are practical decisions. Smaller washed gravel compacts into a walkable surface for a side path; one-to-two inch river rock is the standard for beds and drip strips and stays put on a mild slope; larger cobble is for drainage swales and areas taking real water flow. Grey river rock reads neutral against almost any siding, while browns and tans warm up a house with earth-tone stone or brick. We can also tie a stone bed directly into a French drain or a downspout outlet so the drainage work stays invisible.
