Spring Yard Prep Checklist for Central PA

A short seasonal list for Hanover-area yards: bed edges, mulch depth, drainage, and the fence and deck checks worth doing in April.
Walk the yard before you buy anything
Winter tells you where your problems are. Look for standing water, washed-out mulch, heaved pavers and leaning posts before you spend money on plants.
Beds and mulch
Re-cut a clean edge, then mulch two to three inches deep. Deeper than that suffocates roots and holds too much moisture against stems.
- Two to three inches of mulch, no volcanoes on trunks
- Crisp spade-cut edge instead of plastic edging
- Pull weeds before mulching, not after
Fence and deck check
Rinse vinyl fence with a hose, check gate hardware and hinges for winter sag, and look at deck fasteners and railing posts for movement. Small fixes in spring prevent bigger repairs in fall.
